FREDERIKSHAVN (Dagbladet): Two of Norway’s group rivals Russia and Spain met in the evening to top match of Group D in the handball world championship.
Both teams opened with victories in the first round and today’s winner would have a good grip on 1st place in the group.
And it was Russia who ran off with all three points.
Made to Yevgeny Trefilov won 28-26 and have thus turned the two supposed best teams in the group, Norway and Spain.
– I’m very impressed of Russia. It was a fantastic handball match, says TV2 commentator Bent Svele on the fly.
Irina Bliznova was Russian top scorer with seven goals. For Spain was Carmen Martin most målfarlig with six goals in eight attempts.
No Norway support
The match was important for Norway as Spanish victory would make it completely open in the battle for 1st place in group and thus assumed easier opponent in semi final.
Russia and Spain followed each other like shadows at the start of the match. A steady and målrik game ended with Russia got a little initiative right at the end and led 16-14 at the break.
But after the fire woke Spaniards’ defensive fibers. Spain picked up Russia score was suddenly 18-19 ten minutes into the second half.
Especially Alexandrina Cabral proved up with offensive magic for Spain.
Enraged Trefilov
Twelve minutes were played by half when Trefilov fired properly up on the sidelines.
Ksenia Makeeva got a Russian two minutes and Trefilov was furious. The Russian coach threw timeout card in the floor and yelled at the officials.
– Here flies the like. He (Trefilov) throws the card into the floor. He gets irritated. He pats the referee, said TV2 commentator Bent Svele on the fly.
– He should be happy he escaped with a yellow card, it could become a new two-minutes, said colleague Harald Bredeli.
Russia had to play four against six field players, but red Royen broke smoothly away. Score 20-20 was fulltallg teams.
And the players woke up really after onset. In the final minutes it was the Russians who showed up there and went ashore victory 28-26.
Tonight’s first game in Arena Nord between Kazakhstan and Romania ended 20-36.
Norway – Puerto Rico starts at 20.30 and broadcast on TV 2.
