Premier League player arrested for assaulting a minor – VG

Sunderland confirming that midfielder Adam Johnson (27) early today arrested for sexual assault on a 15 year old girl.

It was Monday morning the player was approached by police in his home and interrogated about suspicions that he allegedly had sexual intercourse with a minor girl. In the UK the age of consent the same as in Norway – ie 16 years.

Now he reportedly arrested while police are investigating the case.

The Sun first wrote about the case and a number of British media were quick to name the player with 12 caps and two goals for England. The Guardian has gained access to a statement from the club where it states that “Sunderland AFC confirms that Adam Johnson is suspended from the club pending the outcome of the investigation. The case will not be commented further at this time. “

The police will also have found a loaded firearm in the house of Johnson, but this weapon he should have been allowed to own.

Sunderland play away match against Hull on Tuesday night, but it is thus without Johnson in the squad.

Johnson played his provisional last cap for England in 2012, right after the transition from Manchester City to Sunderland. 27-year-old broke through Middlesbrough and was taken to the City in 2010 where he struggled to break into real space.

He has been a key player for Sunderland and has scored four league goals this season – including one goal in the 2-3 defeat against his old club Manchester City 1 January. Ten days earlier, he was the match winner against arch rival Newcastle where he played until he was ten years old.
