(Dagbladet / Prosycling.no): The Russian cyclist Eduard Vorganov has made a positive doping test. It reports the International Cycling Union (UCI) said in a statement.
He has tested positive for drug meldonium outside competition during a session on 14 January. The rider has a right to B sample analyzed, but is temporarily suspended.
Meldonium, also known as mildronate, came first on the prohibited list January 1, 2016.
Teammate with Kristoff
Medical Head of Anti-Doping Norway, Per Wiik Johansen, told procycling .com that he has little experience with the drug, and that he therefore can not say much about the performance-enhancing effect of it. Meldonium is basically used as heart medicine and Johansen says they know it has been used previously.
Vorganov’s teammate Alexander Kristoff of Team Katusha. It is the second time in a short time that cycling team has been shaken by a doping case. During the Tour de France was Luca Paolini taken when he tested positive for cocaine.

“As Eduard Vorganov took this product on its own initiative, the Team Katusha start its own investigation as this is a violation of the team’s strict anti doping rules,” writes Team Katusha in a statement.

Vorganov bikes currently Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, where he on Friday’s leg was number 29.
the 33-year-old russian has been Team Katusha since 2010, after he started professional career in Karpin-Galicia in 2007. Vorganov became russian champion in 2012, and has a 19th position from both the Giro d’Italia (2009) and the Tour de France (2012) as some of its top results.
– A shock
Alexander Kristoff reacted strongly when Luca Paolini tested positive for cocaine in July 2015.
– It was a shock for the whole team. He’s taken cocaine, and it’s not something you want to have in the team, said Kristoff July last year.
When asked how the team took the news, said Kristoff:
– it was with shock and disbelief. That he test positive for cocaine during the Tour de France, I had never imagined. It’s not like he’s lying in the room.
