Meldonium (also known as THP, MET-88, Mildronats or Quaterine) is a drug that should optimize the energy metabolism in the heart when the heart lacks oxygen.
The result is that the heart requires less oxygen and it jobs easier with less oxygen. Antidoping agencies have not enough data to determine how the drug affects the heart in healthy people – such as young, healthy athletes. The drug was still sitting on the doping list with effect from 1 January.
A study shows admittedly meldonium increases endurance capacity, improves the recovery process after exercise, reduces stress and improves the activation of the central nervous system functions. These are effects that can take advantage of in sports.
One can not ignore the fact that it may also have muscle-building effects.
Meldonium was the world antidopingbyrås (WADA) in 2015, and it was moved to the list of banned substances during the transition to 2016. Then there were strong indications of relatively widespread use in sport (based on laboratory testing and analysis of data from different WADA-accredited laboratory, especially in utholdenhet- and strength sports.
Meldonium are currently manufactured and marketed by Grindeks, a pharmaceutical company in Latvia. the agent used in Lithuania and Russia. It is not approved for use as the United States.
