The Austrian high jumper Thomas Morgenstern (27) puts up with immediate effect.
– I have decided to take the leap into a new life and quit hereby jump my career. I have not regained confidence I need after that nasty fall last season, said Morgenstern at a press conference Friday.
The decision did not come as a surprise to Norway’s national coach Alexander Stöckl.
– It has long been uncertain whether he would continue, and now he has therefore taken the decision. I do not think that he was afraid to jump, but confidence is necessary, take out everything in a ski slope, he said.
Won almost everything
27-year-old Morgenstern has won almost everything in ski jumping. The only thing he really lacks is an individual World Champion in ski flying.
The Austrian has become the world champion (2011) and Olympic Champion (2006). He has also helped win two Olympic laggull home country (2006 and 2010) and he has won seven laggull in the World Cup context. In addition, he won jump week in 2010/11 season.
Last season was one big letdown for the Austrian ski veteran. He fell foul 1:02
Stöckl thank
Morgenstern debuted in the World Cup in the 2002/03 season and the 245 starts won a total of 23 World Cup victories.
– I just have to thank him for what he has done and wish him continued success in another career. He finds probably nothing interesting to do in the future, said Stöckl about his compatriot.
Stöckl and the Norwegian jumpers are on the way to the Austrian Hinzenbach for the last races in this year’s Summer Grand Prix.
