English football has been a great success for the channel since they secured the rights in 2010. But TVNorge- and Eurosport owner SBS Discovery is entered as a new major player in sports rights market and has giit TV2 grueling battle to get to show English football in Norway.

The battle for Norwegian football

Now remains the struggle for the rights of the other major leagues and the Norwegian league. TV2 rights chief Bjorn Taalesen has stated to Fædrelandsvennen that channel also wants rights to broadcast Spanish and Italian football. So it remains to see if the price for Premier League rights have made today’s win less hungry for the other rights.

– In TV 2 Sporten we welcome eliteserien too. There are some rights that are our hearts closer than others, and there are three particular: Premier League, Norwegian league and Tour de France. There are three rights that one has a personal relationship, and that editors have a very strong ownership, says sports director in TV 2, Vegard Jansen Hagen to Fædrelandsvennen, adding:

– As sports director, I hope that we can continue to show premier league on.

He said that they still do not know how the Premier League wants to sell their product, and that we therefore are hesitant to it, but says that TV 2 Sporten today have received a clear signal that channel wishing to pursue further on attractive sports rights.

– Premier League means a lot. It is the most attractive sports rights is possible to buy in Norway. It is no secret that we’ve got tough battle this time, so it has been a nerve strain. Now it is the greater relief, says Jansen Hagen.

The sporting director Jan Erik Aalbu in SBS Discovery, TV2′s main competitor for the rights, writes in an SMS to Fædrelandsvennen that he wants to congratulate TV 2 for another three years. He will not answer very detailed if it now be more important for Discovery to secure the rights of Norwegian league.

– We do not comment on the rights that are not in play, or we do not have, but I can promise that we are betting on sports, writes Aalbu.

For VG says editor in chief of Discovery Networks Norway, Harald Stromme, the following:

– If the price level their sources operate with their votes, I would say that a loss would give greater cause for relief than disappointment.

TV2 longtime commentator, øyvind alsaker, is very pleased that his employer will continue to offer the Premier League.

– I cheered somewhat insane. These are very large. It is a right that many have been looking for, and that you can never take for granted. Now we get it in a second term, and that means that TV 2 will have Premier League for nine consecutive years. That in itself is pretty amazing, says Alsaker to TV2.

Therefore, sport is important for pay-TV

– Tippeligaen has cost more so far, but there is a sharp jump. The price of Premier League rights begin at least to approach. If it exceeds the price of the rights for Norwegian football we’ll see. But it is an interesting development, said Harry Arne Solberg told newspaper Aftenposten on Friday morning.

Solberg is a professor at Trondheim Business School and has researched the sport and television rights for years.

TV rights for football internationally has exploded since the early 90s. Specifically, agreements for Premier League rights has multiplied several times. Digital developments have led to a revolution in the distribution of TV football. Sport, and especially football, is also the most attractive content for pay-TV channels.

– There are two things that have worked for pay-TV: Sport, especially football, and film. With solutions that Netflix’s film market falling slightly together as effective instrument, and it is sport that remains. A film can also watch anytime, while sport is interesting there and then. And then you must have something attractive. TV2′s pay-TV concept will collapse if they do not get one of the two chief products: Premier League or the Premier League, explains Solberg.
