Should help the sport to greater openness – Dagsavisen

Idrettspresident Tom Tvedt and Norwegian Confederation of Sports has been criticized for lack of transparency in recent months. A number in VG has created a broad debate on the need for more transparency in sports peak spending.


 
 

Monday met Tvedt and sports federation’s Secretary General Inge Andersen Culture Minister Linda Hofstad Helleland for the second time in a week to discuss the issue. During the meeting with the minister launched the sports president several measures, which sometimes create an independent committee headed by former Director of Broadcasting John G. Bernander.


 
 

The committee’s other members were also presented later Monday. It consists of Robert Eriksson, Åse Aulie Michelet, Anne Homes Brook, Stein Opsal, Turid Solvang, Kai Erik Gjestgjevarstad, May Britt Lagesen, Bjorn Soleng and Kristin Setså.


 
 

The Norwegian Veritas will facilitate and act as advisors to the sample during the work.


 
 

Deadline: October 1

 
 

– I think the pool could contribute to a review and possible adjustments in practices and regulations, which can strengthen confidence in the sports organization and the important work these are doing and looking forward to starting work immediately Committee at large is appointed, said Bernander in a statement.

 
 

After the meeting with the Minister stated idrettspresident Tvedt that other members would be announced later Monday, but in the press release from the Norwegian Confederation of Sports (NIF) signaled that this work may take longer.


 
 

The committee will present its assessments, recommendations and proposals for changes for the whole sports organization no later than October 1.


 
 

This is the Committee’s mandate:

 
 

* Consider whether the sport’s control procedures are adequate, transparent and trustworthy to ensure that resources are used in accordance with current economic policies and the objective of prudent and responsible use of resources.


 
 

* The Committee requested specifically assess whether the current control is appropriate in order to identify and report discrepancies and possible abuse or irresponsible use of resources in the businesses or the exercise of work or assignments within these.


 
 

* How sport as an organization should practice openness about its own activities, including financial transactions given the current laws and regulations and that the sport receives public funds.


 
 

* About the basis of other comparable NGOs is another practice related to disclosure of financial information, and thereby assess whether there is reason to change the sport’s status related to the Freedom of Information Act, including the right third-party access.

Idrettspresident Tom Tvedt announced today also their travel expenses. Meanwhile, he denies that sports leaders have been muzzled in transparency debate.


 
 

Tvedt has raised a total of 238.819 million since Sports Parliament in Trondheim where he was chosen as idrettspresident last June. The largest item is a little over 58,000 million, which is for the IOC session in Kuala Lumpur via Los Angeles on July 24. In Los Angeles, he was stopped by Special Olympics. Overall he spent 73,000 crowns on the tour.


 
 

Monday met sport President Culture Minister Linda Hofstad Helleland (H) for the second time in a week to discuss the level of transparency in Norwegian sport. Tvedt has been criticized for not providing access to the travel expenses he has delivered in time idrettspresident.


 
 

– To go ahead as idrettspresident I come together with the Secretary-General to publish my travel expenses during the day, says Tvedt.


 
 

It was made Monday afternoon.


 
 

General Inge Andersen had traveled for 293,015 kroner in the same period.


 
 

Wide range

 
 

In the meeting with the Minister let Tvedt also presented several initiatives that will contribute to greater transparency in sports tops and their financial dealings.


 
 

– We put partly down a wide range to look at transparency in sport. The purpose of this committee is not to conceal or hide anything, but it will look at the extent to which our organization is open. It deals not only travel expenses, but many things, says Tvedt – and elaborates:

 
 

– It includes articles about our calendar, and where we always are. We need to create this in a proper way.

Asked whether it is relevant to submit General Inge Andersen expense of such Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014, he replied:

 
 

– I relate to the time I’ve been president, so we get to come back to rest.

– When it comes, I will explain myself. I have nothing to hide, he said.
