– The development whether we like it or not, says Vegard Ulvang.
Vasaloppet has for years been won of runners who have staked. This year was also Birken won on pure-making. And soon takes-making poured also in plain classic skiing?
In 1984-1985 took skating no cross-country skiing. This winter the Norwegian national sport undergone a significant new change. -Making has taken even more in the classic races, and this year was race for the first time won by someone who just staked, Petter Eliassen. There after Trønder a year ago considered making as its weakest side. So he trained on just that – and won both Vasaloppet and Birken year. And it has become increasingly stories about turløpere who have gone over to just stake. For example Kare Skogsrud. 59-year-old walked the longest turløp, Lillehammer Troll Ski Marathon, with only making. 12 mil!
– Development is development. It does not have to be concerned about it. That people go faster and faster skiing is great, says Vegard Ulvang. As head of cross committee of FIS on the tenth year is he in many ways the man to lead cross-country skiing in the future.
– There is no doubt that classical cross-country is undergoing a restructure phase and some will perhaps find it painful. But it goes fast to stake and it’s development whether we like it or not.
No ban
Ulvang was even active when the previous, large engineering change came, he shot no.
– I was 22 years in 1985 and close on skating when no one came. It was the another sport, and it was discussed about skating should be banned. Staking is clearly a topic on calendar Congress we should have. Yes, the discussion taking place daily, but I do not think any prohibition is the way to go. It’s just a bit unusual when the world around us is changing.
– Do nothing about diagonal hallway disappears?– I do not think it will disappear completely. We saw in Falun that it was not talking about just to stake, but it has little with the firmness of the ground and trails to do. In the World Cup we can adjust the slopes if we want, but cross country shall goose everywhere. We just have to accept that-making has come and that it will evolve. It shall be allowed, says Ulvang.

Most worried cheating
It was long runners who first proved that making moving faster than diagonal. If Classic also can trick into some strides, it goes even faster. It is ulvang biggest concern.
– We need to get better control. It is part cheating with people taking strides. But we must have video evidence to dic anyone, and it is not always easy. Maybe we need to give TDs right to “blow the whistle”? says Ulvang.
Also ships resident Erik Røste are more worried about cheating
– Cross has two styles, and them it is important to preserve. The challenge is not that more making, but to ensure that it does not skate classic. And we must create rules that it is possible to control. We see that the rules are stretched when to switch tracks and when the runners going swings. And it happens even more when there is no TV coverage, says Røste.
– Will diagonal hallway disappear?
– Yes, in some classic races will it, but not in practice and not in all competitions.
Trainers almost just making
Anders Aukland is one of those who have been bringing forward stakes era. The extreme use of staking began long races.
– It’s been a very development in the last five to six years. It began in 2008 when Jerry Ahrlin went on shiny ski in many races. And in 2010, Birken in principle won the shiny ski, even if there was a feast of grease in the image.– Why is it becoming so?
– The level of staking is become higher and higher, and it goes fast to stake. We long races trainer almost just making and we have not yet seen the best. It is the best runners who develop training and technique. Also in the regular world cup is level-making become higher and higher. But in the World Cup with steep slopes will still be used feast of grease, says Aukland, which is also concerned about the tendencies of skating Classic.
Youngsters take the new style
As old classic runner looks Aukland on developments with both horror and joy.
– I love diagonal hallway and it seems a pity that it is losing ground. I would gladly have gone diagonal, but I like the combination. And I love challenges. -Making has given me, which is now 42 years, new motivation to exercise, do other things. This is an exciting development to be involved in.
– Will diagonal hallway disappear?
– Yes, in competitions I think it can happen. But it fits fine for people traveling in the forest and mountains. But making will pay off if you are strong. And making is easier to learn than diagonal. And so you do not lubricate.
– What happens to the youth?
– They are good to stake. For those who grow up there will now be making and skating, says Anders Aukland.
And with Madshus they have begun to develop stake skis …
