Monday came the sad news that Saxo Tinkoff rider Ivan Basso must withdraw from the Tour de France as a result of testicular cancer.
The cancer was discovered after the Velten on the Tour’s 5th stage, Wednesday last week.
– The testicle was adamant
Tinkoff Saxo doctor Piet de Moor confirms that it was for well Basso first complained of pain in the left testicle.
– He did not particularly hurt, but soon the pain spread to the groin, and Ivan asked me what this could be . I checked him, and jabbed the left testicle his who was adamant, says the Moor to TV 2, and continues:
– We contacted the UCI because we would check it out further. And after a thorough check, they found thus a tumor in the left testicle.
– Velten may have saved the life of Ivan
doctor is in Like all obviously upset at Basso’s behalf, but delighted that this was discovered so early.
– Was it really a little luck that Basso overturned last Wednesday?
– Yes, absolutely. For it caused the cancer that was detected at a very early stage. So early on that I would think it’s 98 or maybe 99 percent chance that this ends well, says the doctor, adding:
– Had it not been for this Velten, it could well really bad. Velten may have saved the life of Ivan. If we had discovered the tumor in a year could prospects looked bleaker than they they do now. So this was luck.
Furthermore tell the Moor that Basso travel to Italy today, Monday, and that he will be operated on Wednesday.
