Bicycle President: – We are irritated and terribly disappointed – Dagbladet.no

(Procycling.no/Dagbladet): The Norwegian bike rider Vegard Robinson Bugge (25) has presented a positive doping test after taking asthma medicine.

Bugge has tested positive for the drug terbutaline. The sample was taken during the Tour des Fjords in Norway in late May.

– We in cycling federation is irritated and disappointed. We are annoyed because it pops up a case like this. We like that bad. Meanwhile, we are disappointed that he’s a young, promising rider who is so dull that he did not report the use of this so far completely legitimate asthma medication. We are terribly disappointed, says sykkepresident Harald Tiedemann Hansen told Dagbladet.

– Irritant goofy

Bicycle president even spoke with Elaine Robinson Bugge when they got the message from the International Cycling Federation (UCI) yesterday.

– I announced what I thought. He puts Norwegian cycling in a bad reputation, he put his career at stake and destroy much of their team. He was very upset, and see for yourself that this is bloomin clumsy. I believe in his explanation. But it does not, like the regime has become. He knows very well that way should be reported. It’s awfully easy to have a conversation with your doctor, so he had the usual medication. No, this is annoying clumsy, says Tiedemann Hansen.

Robinson Bugge gets probably not a huge severe punishment, there is a heavy substance, but a necessary preparation. But bicycle president is afraid that this case will create problems for the cyclist in the future.

– Yes, I am. He put his career at stake.

Critical

25-year-old bikes for the Norwegian continental team Team Sparebanken Sør, one of the most prolific teams in Norwegian cycling. National coach Stig Kristiansen is also critical:

– This is a stupidity on his part. This is his own responsibility, that he must stand trial. Elaine could have ruined his whole career with this mistake, he said.

– It is a pity that he did not update the medical certificate he had the drug earlier. There is to be an expensive experience, which is unfortunate and clumsy, says the Secretary General of the Norwegian cycling federation, Bjorn Saetre.

Asthma Medicine

Bugge suffer from asthma, which he has documentation, and earlier he had license to use asthma medication Bricanil.

A few years ago he went over to use Ventolin instead. It is a medicine you do not need approval to use.

During this year’s Tour des Fjords used Bugge Bricanil again – as he did a few years ago – because he should have been empty for Ventolin but he had forgotten that his authorization to use the kind of medicine went out as far back as in 2009.

– This is a horror story for athletes. Elaine admits he has acted clumsily. If he had the approval, it would have been no issue. He has no need to look at the B sample, says Atle Kvålsvoll, sports manager for Team Sparebanken Sør.
