SETERMOEN (TV2 Sport): Sam Bennett surprised many by turning Alexander Kristoff, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Bryan Coquard and their names on the second leg of Arctic Race of Norway Friday.
Probably surprised he also himself.
Sam Bennetts season, not to mention career, namely been full of hardship of the anything special kind.
peed blood and had to retire his first Tour
Bennett has indeed won three races already this year and is mentioned by people with intimate knowledge of the sport as a future great sprinters.
But just a few weeks ago, he was anything but good condition.
In his first Tour de France struggled namely 24-year-old with the disease and eventually had to break on the 17th lap. The reason? Iren struggled with an infection that eventually caused him peeing blood.
Then he had to pack bag and leave the race, but the disease did not disappear at once for that reason. The Briton could tell us a website cyclingnews.com that he had gone on antibiotics for nine days before Arctic Race.
The ultimatum: priests or lay up
Bennett, who was born in Belgium and is the son of former Eendracht Wervik-footballer Michael, Nor has had only simple seasons before this one.
In 2009, he crashed with a car head first, but dropped an away with only a broken clavicle and one thigh injury .
In 2012 and 2013, he struggled with a chronic knee problem which meant that the results did not materialize and that he was considering scrapping the entire career. Before the Tour of Britain in 2013, he was so far down that he decided to retire unless he managed to assert itself in the British stage race.
As the story suggests he succeeded – and something violent. Second place on two stages (behind Mark Cavendish and Gerald Ciolek) was followed by a stage win, and then took his career in earnest guy.
– I had tacos legs
2014 season began with victories in both Almeria, Cologne and Bayern Rundfahrt, but of course also came adversity.
In the Tour of Britain, he became ill and had the entire three antibiotics. The season was over, but 2015 season he started at best show by winning the final stage in the Tour of Qatar.
Now he is again on top of the podium.
– The team did a fantastic job today. It feels good to beat Kristoff won. I had tacos legs today, but was helped through by my team, said a grateful Bora-Argon 18-rider after the finish.
Winding guy and his buddy Shane Archbold was overjoyed after the race and have no doubts about the talent of Bennett.
– It worked perfectly today. He had a tough time in the Tour with sickness and stuff, but he’s back again now. We still have much to go on, but it gets better and better. He beats some of the best sprinters in the world here, so he’s certainly one of the best sprinters.
