(Dagbladet): Bernard Hopkins (soon 50), the oldest world champion in boxing, lost in the night their WBA- and IBF belts at light heavyweight to Sergei Kovalev (31).

Kovalev boxed convincing and expand the collection with WBA – and IBF belts. Previously he had WBO belt. The fight went 12 rounds, but Hopkins was beaten.

Respecting each other

– All respect to him. We both would have knocked against anyone, and that’s how we ended up here tonight. That’s what brought us together. That’s what people want to see a title, one belt, a champion, says Hopkins to ESPN.

Kovalev have great respect for Hopkins, who turns 50 in two months. Nevertheless, he recommends the legend box to add up.

– I was almost too quiet for this match. The only thing I was worried about was that I was not nervous. I think he was a tough opponent. He is very good at keeping distance. I really respect him for the fight, but I think he should retire, because he has already done so much and have to let the younger escape to. I am the next person, said Kovalev.



Long story

Hopkins grew up in a criminal environment in Philadelphia, and was imprisoned at age 17, with a 18-year sentence in front of him. Four years into his stay he was introduced to boxing.

He was released from prison after five years, and converted to Islam, and stayed away from alcohol and drugs. In 1988 he knocked his first boxing match. He lost his first game, but from there it only went up.

In 2009, he became the first boxer who collected tracks from all the major four unions, IBF, WBA, WBO and WBC.
