Was imprisoned with Mandela – now he will be the new FIFA president – Bergens Tidende

Tokyo Sexwale, South African businessman and former political prisoner, will stand for election in the hope of becoming the new FIFA president.

It confirmed a spokesman Saturday.

– He is South Africa’s candidate, and we hope that he gets all Africa’s candidate, said Peter Paul Ngwenya.

As anti apartheid activist put Sexwale of his time in prison on Robben Island off Cape Town along with Nelson Mandela. He was imprisoned for 13 years until he was released in 1990.

Since he has held high political office and earned a fortune in the country’s diamond industry. Sexwale has no active role in South African football out that he participated in seeking campaign that got the 2010 World Cup to the country, and the Organizing Committee for the playoffs.

Beckenbauer investigated by FIFA

He has received support from, among others, Franz Beckenbauer, who earlier this month said Sexwale can count on support from Germany’s football association.

South Africa’s football association announced on Twitter that it fully supports Sexwale candidacy in the presidential election in February.

FIFA have never had an African president, but Issa Hayatou from Cameroon is acting president while Sepp Blatter is suspended for three months. (© NTB)
