When the trainer came home from the World Cup, the apartment was empty and his partner gone – Adresseavisen

STRÖMSTAD / OSLO (Aftenposten): National team manager Johan Flodin in rowing had a weird feeling in my stomach. He really knew what awaited him when he opened the door to their own home after having been in the World Championships.

When he looked into the empty apartment, he heard himself breathe and expel a small gasp. Cohabitant had traveled and brought the furniture.

But he blamed her.

NB: Flodin ex-partner are familiar with the contents of this article.

Got a hint

The Swede who has been Norway’s national coach for two seasons, understands that it is difficult to live with someone who is far away. Yet it is hard to find a violation. Time after the World Cup has been difficult.

– The chair stood again, says coach pointing at a red upholstery in the bright living room.

Now he has bought new sofa and what it takes to make it cozy. The room where her two children had their beds, is still empty, only with a paint box on the floor.

48-year-old has experienced what many top coaches experience: A job with much traveling and unsociable hours struggling in private life.

Rotreneren says he is boundless in its job when it comes time. If he is ineffective earlier in the day, he takes it only later in the evening. The job must be done. In a small associations with limited resources, he has many tasks.

Enters with whole ones

29. October adds researcher Marte Bentzen at NIH forward his thesis on exactly this topic. Those who feel that they have been greatly fatigued during the season, experience a much greater conflict between work and life, than those who are less fatigued, showing Bentz survey.

It shows that top coaches are passionate about their job.

– They say “I love it, and I have my job.” Their identity is very attached to being a coach and they are willing to put a lot of energy and time into it, she says.

What captivated her when she started on his thesis for two years since, was the desire that coaches should have a good life in elite sport.

– Besides, sport tape that trainers feel uncomfortable and may stop after a short time.

38-year-old along with a Norwegian and Swedish colleague followed 299 coaches from many sports in the two countries. Questionnaires have been used on several times during the competition season. No one has similarly followed top coaches long time.

The results show that 25 percent of the coaches feel exhausted at the end of the season.

– The chance of getting burned is greater in occupations where they are very motivated and have high drive while that there is much to do and requires a high workload, says Bentzen.

At home and yet away

Johan Flodin do not necessarily there are many travel days that are most bothersome. Although he’s gone 25 weeks a year, beside the many days he overnight in Oslo or at Aarungen.

– It may not absence when away is bad, but the absence when you are at home. After many weeks of traveling, whether on collections or championships, one needs to land. It is not just turning over to private life. Expectations at home is that it will help, and it’s affordable. But it is not so easy to fulfill the expectations.

– What happens when one is far away, is also that you get less time together. Many say that quality is more important than quantity, but there is a modicum of how small quantity it can be too. If one is very small compared, it becomes difficult to create loyalty.

Jobs around the clock

Common to all the coaches who take such top jobs is high motivation, according to the survey. Coaches spend very much time at work, and at all hours. A job as national coach starts early and ends late. The progress also on weekends, when many others have free.

Marte Bentz data says that many trainers are tired even when the season starts. They suffer and are at high risk of being burned.

She believes the focus must be greater from sports organization as an employer, and the responsibility a national federations have.

Burnout is a work related syndrome, no diagnosis in Norway.

– I hear people say that you must burn to be burned, commenting Flodin.

About to be through small

But what is fatigue and what is burnout?

Bentzen explains that burnout consists of three different dimensions:

Emotional exhaustion is more than being tired after working week. One is through small.

Then arises cynicism, which is a defense mechanism that you have too much to do in terms of their own capacity. You can not take everything into account the fact giving more f … This can be a burden in itself, in that one begins to act more cynical ways than one like yourself.

When a person experienced increased fatigue and cynicism over time, will work in poor performance. Job performed worse than might be desired. It does not so much anymore. Then you can start talking about burnout.

Researchers have prompted the first signs, how the coaches notice that they are not doing well. One of the symptoms they report, is growing cynicism, that they no longer care about the job.

Got an unfamiliar feeling

Johan Flodin recognize. He also noticed that he was more cynical, something he had not felt before.

– When you start to become cynical, commutes between you that something is very important and almost unimportant. The question pops up: Why am I doing this, I could have had a job nine to five.

He chose to tell how he was en route, in the run-up to the World Cup, when he realized how the relationship was going. He got a lot of support of the active. There are those who give him energy, no matter how tired he had to be before he comes to training.

He feels privileged after all, a daughter who is healthy, a good salary and a profession that builds on passion.

– It is not the first time it crashes in this way. But I think that the preconditions for having a good relationship, getting better and better. I think it is possible to have such a job without fail private, says Johan Flodin.

He just has not quite found the gold standard yet.
