Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson had little time for the Liverpool players’ white dresser in front of the FA Cup final in 1996.
When Liverpool crew starring Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Jamie Redknapp entered the Wembley pitch with white suits, blue shirts and a blue flower on the chest, was Ferguson immediately assured victory, writes The Independent.
In a documentary about the Scot who appears on BBC Sunday He was shown a photograph of the three players.
– Why did they do that? he says, recalling that he turned to his assistant Brian Kidd, saying “1-0.”
It was also the final score after Eric Cantona blasted the winning goal from about 16 meters.
When asked why he felt confident of victory after seeing the white suits, he replied:
– I think it was arrogant and showed too much confidence, or , I do not know. It was ridiculous. Blue shirt, red and white tie and white dress – with a white flower. Who designed that outfit?
– The said most was that Roy Evans (Liverpool manager) and Ron Moran (first team coach) wore black suits. I think they were embarrassed, says Ferguson.
The former United manager lends itself however not with it.
– Liverpool is a big club with a lot of history. The outfit did not represent Liverpool.
