Deila can finish with the league Gold – Dagsavisen

By Øystein Bjerkestrand

If all goes well get Celtic league trophy immediately after the home match against Motherwell on 15 May, the date Celtic and Deila agreed to be his last in the Scottish club.

What kind of reception gets Ronny Deila from fans then? Cuptapet against arch rival Rangers Sunday was at least more than the club management could endure.

– It is important that the team comes first and that I am not in focus, says Deila Celtics website.

Expensive loss

Sunday’s loss against crosstown and archenemy Rangers found Celtic the lead so heavy, that yesterday was no way back for Deila. Thus came sortie so many experts had thought.

Ronny Deila had simply not afford defeat against city rivals. Several think he still walked a bleak future ahead with only the league title to play for, while others, among them Chris Sutton, advocated kicking Deila immediately:

– Let’s change manager now. Get into someone who gives us a little hope about games in Europe next season. If that happens next season over before it has begun, and Rangers and Aberdeen can have a real hope of winning the series, wrote Sutton after defeat to Rangers.

Short Stay

Ronny Deila joined Celtic in June for barely two years ago. Earlier this season smoke Celtic into Champions League qualifier against Åge Hareide Malmo.

The answer now after barely two years in the manager chair shows 19 losses, 20 draws and 75 victories. Now he gets another five matches as CEO.

Celtic leads the Scottish series clearly, eight points ahead of Aberdeen, and it is highly unlikely that there will be league gold number two on Deila before leaving Glasgow.

David Moyes is bookmaker favorite to take over the manager job after Deila.

Should defend league championship

– I’m thinking now only of defending league championship and give the team the fifth title in a row, said Deila in a long “farewell interview” yesterday.

– There have been ups and downs in this job, he added, thanks “for having been given the chance.”

Near triple

Ronny Deila was probably only a judge mistake away from a title-triple last season. It ended with a win in league and cup.

In recent months, 40-year-old from Telemark lived under a constant rain of criticism from many quarters. Bottom place in the group and dobbelttap against Molde in Europa League was the start of the downturn for Deila. (NTB)
