Cross Country Runner Martin Johnsrud Sundby has suffered a fatigue fracture of a rib on the left side during training camp in Val Senales.
– I’m not worried about the situation, says Martin Johnsrud Sundby.
A fatigue crack or stress fracture does not occur as a result of an acute injury, but as a result of an overload. The current leg is subjected to stresses and bends over time and break eventually in the same way as a metal rod may break after repeated bending back and forth.
– I do not have much pain and can train as normal, but would of course not mean that the damage will sit for longer than necessary, says Sundby.
– Martin coach normally
Teams Physician Knut Gabrielsen downplaying the situation.
– This rib fracture will by now have no limitation for the upcoming ski season, says national team doctor Knut Gabrielsen.
the chief of Sundby fatigue cracks:
At the same time it is clear that national trio Niklas Dyrhaug, Didrik Tønseth and Martine Ek Hagen has been a cold. None of the three national team runners will start at Beitostølen weekend.
TV 2 met coach Vidar Løfshus.
– Unfortunately, Martin received an injury just before the season opener. The first consequence could be that he does not go here on the weekend. He comes up to Beitostolen during the day after receiving treatment in Oslo. He’ll try the track to see if it can fit him in terms of the pain he experiences, says Løfshus.
– Is the World Cup opening in danger?
– No, not the way I understood the doctor and Martin himself. He has trained normally. The pain occurred quite early in Val Senales. When he got home he took an X-ray image and got ascertained fatigue crack, said Løfshus.
Training Workaholic
In last year shocked Martin Johnsrud Sundby to train 1,150 hours. This season he had plans to train even more.
– I do not think I’ve reached the limit of how much exercise your body can withstand. And yes, I have enough trained slightly more than last year, said Johnsrud Sundby TV 2 a few weeks ago.
– Very many people talk about why they are so tired – physically and mentally – that they hardly get out of bed and have to rest. The feeling I have never had. Never known that body must relax. When I take a day’s break it not for that I must do it, but because it is smart for my body, explained Johnsrud Sundby then.
Løfshus will not go with that Sundby have stretched the rubber band too long.
– We have no basis to say. All of us who play sports knows that fatigue failure is something that can occur. It is more about luck and bad luck. Presumably we find never the reason why Martin has got the fatigue fracture, says Løfshus.
– Martin exercising a lot, and it’s his way of doing it. To build up and break down. Martin is in the area all the time. That he’s going to be the rest of his career, I’m quite sure, says Løfshus.
