Monetary Feast of Russian hockey: Norwegian hockey stars part of the escape – Aftenposten

Lower oil prices and sanctions against Russia makes a number of stars will hit away from the league.

Three of our premier hockey profiles, Lars Haugen, Patrick Thoresen and Jonas Holøs, has earned his money in the KHL last season. If any of the three are still to be found in Europe’s best hockey league next season remains to be seen. One is already ready for the Swedish elite league next season, while the other two also rumored to be heading away.

Teams Goalkeeper Lars Haugen signed a three year contract with Färjestad last week. After four seasons in HC Dinamo Minsk is finished keeper in KHL. His last match was the 7-1 loss to Jokerit 5. March, when Haugen team busted by playoffs.

SKA St. Petersburg Patrick Thoresen and Lokomotiv Yaroslav Jonas Holøs has not yet decided where they play next season, but TV2 hockey expert Bjorn Erevik think at least one of the two manifests itself in the continental hockey league.

– I think Patrick is finished. He has been there for so many years, so unless he gets an insanely cheap so I think he goes. Jonas I’m more unsure. He has not played there for so long, says Erevik. Holøs came to the KHL in 2013, while Thoresen has been one of the league’s premier point pickers since 2009.

But even if all three disappear, it looks like it will still be at least one Norwegian in the KHL next season. Several newspapers claim that Mathis Olimb leave Frölunda favor of the Finnish KHL club Jokerit after this season.

Financial problems

The reason for the large uncertainty around several players future, they økonimiske problems in the league. KHL has long lived well on Russian oil money, but after oil prices fell and the Russian ruble almost halved in value Losar, several players lost large sums when they get their wages paid in the Russian currency.

But players not only received half the wages. Earlier this year, several clubs struggled with at all pay salaries to players and coaches. In an interview with thehcoekynews.com back in December, told the Canadian Lada Tolyatti player Jeff Glass of at least four clubs – Atlant, Siberia, Medvescak and Dinamo Riga – where wages had not been paid in four months.

– There are not good here now. Several players are trying to get away. I do not want to reveal the league problems, but none of this is correct and players being cheated, said Glass at the time.

One of those who have marked problems in your wallet is Patrick Thoresen, and according SA.no also got Holøs salary almost halved when currency fell in value. Holøs have not commented salary situation.

Switzerland and Svergie

Both the Norwegian and several other European hockey profiles linked now transitions to Swedish and Swiss hockey.

– The Swiss league is the only one that is near to match KHL on wages. They have a limited number of places for foreign players, so those who come to maintain a high level. But then it’s not room for everyone, explains Erevik.

Last Friday, rumors began to go in Switzerland that Thoresen had a deal ready with Swiss HC Lugano, the team he played for in 2008/09. But this was later rejected by Blick journalist Dino Kessler on Twitter.

– Patrick Thoresen has not signed and will not sign for HC Lugano, he stated Saturday.

Holøs is also connected to the Swiss league. According to the website swisshockeynews.ch is-back open for play there next season in addition to continuing Lokomotiv Yaroslav. He should also have an offer on the table from the old club Färjestad, club Haugen wrote below last week.

– I expect to make a choice quote system two to three weeks. But it is not impossible I wait until after the World Cup. I stress not, says Holøs says Holøs to Värmland Folkeblad. He has previously said he still dreams of a return to the NHL next season.

Russian star on his way out?

In addition to the Norwegians linked several of the league’s Swedish profiles away in Like many of the other foreign profiles. Now it is rumored that the largest Russian star considering future in KHL.

Ilya Kovalchuk had one of the best contracts in the NHL when he departed from the New Jersey Devils to SKA Saint Petersburg. Kovalchuk signed a 15-year long deal worth $ 100 million. Three years later he organized the NHL to sign an agreement with SKA Saint Petersburg, which reportedly was worth $ 20 million annually. Then he had “only” been paid $ 23 million contract with the New Jersey Devils.

Now he, according to reports from Finnish Iltalehti, wish for a return to the NHL before 2016/17 season. But Wednesday night went KHL itself out and rejected rumors Kovalchuk on Twitter.

– Rumors Kovalchuk returning to the NHL has been denied officially, writes the league on its English twitter account.

– Less attractive

With rumors plays flooding out of Russia, it is natural to ask how it will affect KHLs future. But Erevik it difficult to make a concrete prediction.

– It is a difficult question, since there is so much economics involved. It depends on the price of oil, what happens to the ruble and the economic sanctions against Russia. But the uncertainty that is there now can do KHL less attractive, says Erevik.

And even though many rumored away does not mean that all benefits. A reduced payday KHL is still more than what some of the players will get elsewhere. Especially if one takes with Russia’s low tax of 13 percent in the rain play.

– But the best players will be offered such good contracts that they can find to go elsewhere. And it can help to change the balance in European hockey, says Erevik.

PS: The playoffs in KHL nearing its end. Four teams are left in the playoffs. Patrick Thoresen SKA Saint Petersburg CSKA Moscow meetings in the conference finals in the east, while Ak Bars and Siberia play the final in the west.
