Sundby managed it Ulvang, Alsgaard and Northug never managed – Adresseavisen

Dario Cologna or Petter Northug had to fight in the top on Sunday 15 kilometers Classic Lahti to prevent Martin Johnsrud Sundby (30) decided World Cup.

It could neither Cologna or Northug and crystal ball thus goes to Sundby.

Two races remaining and Sundby leader with 322 points on Petter Northug. Northug can take maximum 290 points in the remaining races.

Martin Johnsrud Sundby has now won the overall World Cup two years in a row. Sundby is the first Norwegian who manages it since Bjorn Dæhlie.

Sunday races in Lahti was otherwise won by Italian Francesco De Fabiani.

Sundby had a day at the regular Sunday. Eventually he ended in tenth place.

Surprise man Martin Løwstrøm Nyeng became best Norwegian, with his fourth place.

VM king Petter Northug was number seven.

Closest They Fabiani was Alexej Poltaranin and Sami Jauhojärvi.

First Page Dæhlie

Martin Johnsrud Sundby is thus only the second Norwegian man who has managed to win the overall World Cup two years in a row, since the international competition was founded in 1974 (then in unofficial format).

Bjørn Dæhlie was last Norwegian who managed the feat. Dæhlie won first World Cup in two straight seasons in 1991-1992 and 1992-1993, before he later won three straight seasons in 1994-1995, 1995-1996 and 1996-1997.

Skilegenden also won the World Cup in 1998/99.

Famous Norwegian skiing heroes who Oddvar Brå, Vegard Ulvang, Thomas Alsgaard and Petter Northug has never managed to win the overall World Cup two years in a row.

However, there are four foreigners who have managed it: Gunde Svan (1983-1984 and 1984-1985), Per Elofsson (2000/01 and 2001/02), Tobias Angerer (2005/06 and 2006/07) and last Dario Cologna (2010/11 and 2011/12) .

Cologna and Northug had opportunities

It has long seemed likely that Sundby would win the overall World Cup, even though Petter Northug and Dario Cologna had theoretical possibilities to abscond with crystal ball before Sunday competition.

Sundby has won three World Cup races so far this season – two at Lillehammer and one in Davos. In addition, he won the Tour de Ski standings, just like last year.

Seasonal big disappointment for Røa runner was that he was sick before the World Cup, and lost all exercises except the final femmila, where he was number 11.

Now there are only two World Cup races remaining for the World runners, first sprint in Drammen, then femmila in Holmenkollen.

PS: On the women’s side, Marit Bjoergen long settled World summary.
