Got blood clots last year. In the night he won the Stanley Cup – against all odds – Dagbladet.no

Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup tonight – after beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 on hjemmeis in the sixth final match.

Blackhawks won the NHL trophy three times the last six years, but the night’s triumph was the first time in 77 years that the club secured the huge trophy home in front of their own fans – and it took off when captain Jonathan Toews lifted the trophy.

The first thing he did afterwards was to let teammate Kimmo Timonen get lift the trophy.

It was not coincidental.

Death close

It touched many when Finnish Timonen lifted the trophy in United Center last night.

40-year-old was near death when he got a blood clot in the lungs while he was on holiday at home in Finland last year, but he battled back to both life and ice hockey. And in his career last game he ended finally up like a champ.

– There here is unimaginable, something I’ve dreamed about for the last 17 years, said Kimmo Timonen to NBC after the final victory, writes Swedish Expressen.

He was told to avoid contact sports. If so, hockey one of the sports you at least should stay away. But after a short break from the sport, so Determine Timonen to continue his career.

– I knew actually nothing about pulmonary embolism before the doctor said it was life-threatening. The good news is that heart fared with horror. Another conceivable scenario would have been very dangerous, at worst, could I collapsed on the ice, said Timonen in a with Ilta-Sanomat last summer.

Fully history

After many years in the Nashville Predators and Philadelphia Flyers, so he went to the Chicago Blackhawks on deadline Day in early March. It would prove that a smart latest move in a long career.

Timonen would make a last attempt to win the Stanley Cup.

He called his 16 games in regular season and 18 playoff games for the Blackhawks. The defender was marked down for no points for his new club and last – and it would be wrong to say that he played a central role in the Blackhawks’ way to the Stanley Cup trophy. But it does not matter:

Kimmo Timonen is a typical story of the heavy and long road to the top.

The sport is full of them – and we love dramatic stories ends well in the end.

– Ready to add up

– Now I’m happy and ready to add up. Achieving this moment has been worth all the hours, training and matches through the years. Considering what happened last summer, it has been a tough journey, says Kimm Timonen after 16 seasons and 1,213 NHL games.

Timonen has not just come back after a deadly disease. The Finn also had an ability to become only the second and third best in their sport:

• He won bronze at the Olympics in 1998, 2010 and 2014. He was one goal away from winning the Olympics in 2006.

• He has three World Championship silver.

• He missed one Stanley Cup final in 2010.

• Until the night were two titles in the Finnish league all he had won.

Is it any wonder hockey world dries a tear for Kimmo Timonen today ..?
