Roy Johansen jerks back where he started, in the parent club Vålerenga. With new Jordal Amfi he will take back the hegemony in Norwegian hockey.

Since the 2009 season has not Vålerenga taken home some kongepokal. It will Johansen do something. The club is the most winning in Norwegian hockey with all 26 “buckets” in premium cabinet.

– The ambition is to be at the top of Norwegian hockey. There is much that is different now than when I was last at the club. Then we had more funds to create a team. We have to be a little more patient now, but with the new ice skating in sight so I think the time for Vålerenga looks bright, says Roy Johansen said.

After the job as Norwegian coach is over in the middle of May he takes over as Vålerenga coach when Espen “Shampoo” Knutsen will take on a role as the club’s sporting director after the season.

55-year-old has been coach since 2001. Before that he was manager Vålerenga five seasons. At the end of last year it became known that Johansen did not continue as coach of the national team. Petter Thoresen takes over responsibility from 1 June.

– There have been good years with a fantastic team. I went from job as coach of Vålerenga to the national team. Now I’m ready for the summer with the World Championships in Moscow that end after 16 years. Then maybe 16 years in Vålerenga, said Johansen.

Vålerenga with Shampoo spearheaded was not slow to offer Johansen coach job.

– Vålerenga is an attractive club and I have my roots here. I’ve known here, and I’ve had good contacts and dialogue with Espen and breadth responsible Stig Johansen. Moreover, I felt that I was wanted, said Johansen.

New Jordal from 2018

In January next year as described old Jordal Amfi. The hall has expired. The new facility will be completed in 2018.

– it is exciting things in store with new ice rink, new organization. It was a job I felt was right now, said 55-year-old, who turned down a job with Olympiatoppen.

– With a new Jordal as it provides opportunities for Vålerenga. It is important then we can be part of creating something that is better than it is today where it is difficult to drive with an old arena. A modern arena needed to be able to achieve something in Norwegian hockey.

Teambuilding

Shampoo was delighted with the signing. He goes into a role as sporting director when Johansen is in place after completing the contract with the hockey association.

– We’re very, very pleased to have gotten into Roy. Now continue teambuilding that we have started, said Knutsen.

Johansen played for Vålerenga from 1976 to 1982. Was one of two seasons in Sparta and Djerv before returning to the club. He retired in 1994 and started exercising deed. As a player he got six championship gold with the team next to a “bucket” with Sparta.

As Vålerenga coach he led the team to the championship title in 1998 and 1999 and 2001. (NTB)
