Válber criticizes Sundby for Tour success – VG

The president of the Russian Ski Federation, the former cross-country star Yelena Välbe, criticizes the Norwegian cross-country skiers for the use of asthma medications.

It writes the Russian newspaper Izvetsia.

– Of course it is annoying (the Norwegian success), because it goes asthmatics on the Norwegian team. But if this is allowed by doctors, there is nothing to do with it, she said to the newspaper.

– If an athlete is sick, he will not compete

Putin has previously said that athletes who use drugs for medical reasons should participate in Paralympic sports, and Válber not disagree in his statements.

– I speak all the time about the same. Sundby said recently in an interview in Oberstdorf that he went bad because it was hot, he lost his breath and had to use powerful drugs. For us, this is nonsense. If an athlete is so sick and going so well, what would it be if he was healthy? I think that if an athlete is sick, he will not compete. Meanwhile, if the athlete has a therapeutic permission, so we can not complain. Everyone knows that the Norwegians coach very much, so it would be wrong to write off all of asthma.

– How does the use of drugs against asthma health of athletes?

– They stimulate not, but opens the lungs, making it easier to breathe. But I do not think that this may be enough for 15km or longer. Fortunately, I am not asthmatic, so I can not describe the process accurately. But it is a fact that many of the Norwegian athletes in the junior age receive therapeutic treatment, it is alarming, says Valbas.

There are rampant comments about the use of asthma medication in Russian debate forum, which it has made over a longer period.

“Who knows if the Norwegians are really asthma sufferers?” “I do not like Valbas, but here she has 100 percent right,” and “It must be held Paralympics for asthmatics and so will no one will be interested in the Olympics because the results which are worse than the Paralympics, “are some of the comments from the Russians.

Missing understanding

VG has not come into contact with Martin Johnsrud Sundby, while CIO, the federation Espen Graff, said that coach Vidar Løfshus is the one who is entitled to speak on the matter.

Løfshus think it seems as if Válber lacking understanding of what medication is all about.

– It seems like Válber entangles “Putin-wave” which needs to shun doping. It is just speculation on my part but if she wants she can chat with the medical device our about it so we can take it from there, explains Løfshus.

At the Norwegian cross-country skiers struggling with asthma and use medications for it, is inget again.

– There are many asthmatics from other countries and it has been throughout the ages. You take the medicines they are entitled to take in connection with that one should hold a disease at bay, says Vidar Løfshus to VG, and continues:

– She do not really understand what it is, but it amazes me there are not any in the Russian team who are struggling with respiratory problems as well. You’ll find athletes with asthma in all endurance sports, and Martin is in a special category. He’s had it since he was a little boy. For others it’s more of an occupational injury where one has incurred it throughout his career, says Løfshus.

– Asthma Medicine is shortcut

It is not the first time Norway has been postponed for criticism around top-level athletes asthma medication, and especially Marit Bjoergen has gotten through.

Background: Did yes to medicine for doping list

After 2010 Olympics went Justyna Kowalczyk out with critical statements regarding Bjørgens use of asthma medication.

– Without medication, she had not won. Marit feel threatened, because she knows very well that without her helpers had she not had much of a chance, either against me or the other girls, said Kowalczyk the Polish website Wirtualna Polska, and continued:

– The Norwegians have a lot they should have said when it comes to the topic of doping in Russia, and so they accept this. Where is the logic?

Ahead of 2010/2011-season went Kowalczyk once again onto Marit Bjorgen to cheats good results using asthma medication.

– I prepare the trails and not at the pharmacy, said Kowalczyk In an interview with the Polish big newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza.

Following Kowalczyk statements went Lukas Udelhoven, coach syvkamputøveren Ida Marcussen, hard out against what he believes is a lack of safety culture in the Norwegian elite sport.

– It shall not be the best doctor, but the best athlete that makes one win, said Udelhoven VG then, and continued:

– Instead of pushing the boundaries of training, takes a shortcut with asthma medicine, improves recovery and helps to withstand harder load. Should we hang with the best, it will not be because the best is sick and getting help. There is a tendency I think is frightening, said the coach.
