Alexander Søderlund scored after 76 minutes and ensured that St. Etienne beat Lyon 1-0 in the French top series Sunday night.

– It was very fun for the team and for me. This was a lagmål, said Søderlund.

A jubilant Søderlund adorns the front of Monday’s edition of L’Equipe, one of the biggest newspapers in France and among the largest sports newspapers in Europe.

In the newspaper’s player exchange will Søderlund grade 6 of 10. Only Saint-Etienne goalkeeper Stéphane Ruffier receive better marks than Søderlund in L’Equipe assessment of the team’s players.

– He outwitted Anthony Lopez at first opportunity and got a standing ovation when he was substituted after 83 minutes, writes L’Equipe in the assessment of the Norwegian.

The former Rosenborg- and Haugesund striker made his debut for St. Etienne away against Nantes last weekend. Then it was a defeat, and Søderlund went speechless off. Sunday’s game was Söderlund home debut for St. Etienne.

Kevin Monnet-Paquet stole the ball ten meters from 16 meters, sending Søderlund through. Teams striker finished from 14 meters, via keeper and the goal. The ending was by no means perfect, but it was enough to secure three points and a popular victory among the fans.

– This will become part of the history of the derby and it will be remembered. We were missing a lot of players, but showed courage, selflessness and realism. Absolutely group let down a great effort, said coach Chrisopthe Galtier to Canal +.

Eight minutes before the end could Søderlund been tomålsscorer. The attacker got quit unmarked from seven meters, but shot straight at goalkeeper Anthony Lopes. After 84 minutes, he was replaced by Neal Maupay.
