The Belgian footballer Gregory Mertens (24) should be best man at Mushaga Bakenga upcoming wedding. Thursday died 24-year-old after suffering cardiac arrest on the pitch Monday.

Mertens joined Lokeren from Cercle Brugge last summer. In the latter club he played together with the Norwegian Bakenga.

Was no sign of improvement
Bakenga has since Monday tweeted congratulations to comrade. Immediately after the collapse, he wrote the following:

BBC wrote earlier today that Mertens condition was still critical, and that there were some signs of improvement. Thursday ettermidag came news that the Belgian is dead.

It was played around a quarter of Monday’s game when 24-year-old collapsed on the pitch. The game was stopped and the fans were asked to leave the stadium. Medical staff on site working to revive the former U21 international, before Mertens was taken to hospital after a half an hour.
