Europe will gather a common front against Blatter – Aftenposten

Norway can still get to support FIFA president if everybody agrees on that.

ZURICH: Boycott and demands for postponement of presidential elections are on the agenda when World European leaders gather this morning.

It’s the day after the mass arrests of football tops in Zurich.

At the same time today it really starts, FIFA Congress on Friday after application to determine whether Sepp Blatter gets his fifth term as football powerful man.

The board of the European Football Association (UEFA) fly this morning to Zurich from Warsaw.

The most important task at first is to collect a European front against FIFA president. There they hope will happen when the over 50 member countries meet at 12 o’clock on one of the city’s many five-star hotels.

Do consider boycott of Congress

Wednesday Board was gathered in the Polish capital to see Europe League Final where Sevilla were master for the second consecutive year. Earlier in the day sent out a harsh comment on yesterday’s arrests and the dramatic developments in the corruption scandals that follows football world organization.

UEFA board fears that the entire FIFA Congress will be one big farce after the arrests, saying that Member States must now make a thorough assessment of whether they at all are willing to attend the congress.

UEFA believes Congress should be postponed and that a new presidential election must be organized within six months.

– The first thing that happens is a meeting of all member states of the morning. The Board has made a recommendation on what our view is. Now this must be anchored in all member countries, said UEFA director Karen Espelund told Aftenposten.

Important for UEFA to be critical

She was, like the rest of the football world, taken bed when news of police action in Zurich began to seep into the media in the morning on Wednesday.

The matter escalated throughout the day when the FBI in the US went out against FIFA at a press conference, and FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich was visited by Swiss police.

– A critical point is important for us, it is important for us to take that role. Now we need to discuss this with the member states, says Espelund.

She is convinced that the arrests of football spikes will put a completely different character in Congress. This is precisely why it is also important for UEFA to be clear and give a clear stance on that they think Sepp Blatter’s days as FIFA president soon should be numbered.

Norway opens to vote for Blatter

Norwegian football president Yngve Hallén said Wednesday that it is important for Norway that it is a solution that can have a unifying effect on the football world and that it may be appropriate for Norway to vote for Sepp Blatter.

– We’ll see what UEFA finds. If it becomes a collection around one or another model, we may support it and that Blatter is part of it, if it leads to improvement. It could happen, he told NRK on Wednesday.

His Swedish and Danish colleagues were adamant that it is high time for a presidential change. It is also Norway’s primary.

Hallén says that there has been a confrontation between Western Europe and the rest of the football world and that this has only helped to strengthen Sepp Blatter position.

Therefore, he is open to vote for Blatter whether this is part of a package which also leads FIFA in a better direction.

You mean the arrests weakens Blatter credibility

Espelund seems not very convinced that the European side will find a solution that entails deciding to support a new Blatter period.

– The question the what such a solution will involve but Europe has been relatively clear that they want a change at the top of FIFA, and it completely independent of this matter. This case strengthens the no credibility or legitimacy that this president can lead this further. It would surprise me if this really does not change the case.

– They must the face the fact that this has been a dramatic day of FIFA. The man has been in the lead since the early 80s (Secretary General from 1981 to 1998 and president since 1998) and have a responsibility as system manager and quality assurance. It is too early to say how it will be assessed by others.
