Swansea matchvinnermål was approved thanks to goal-line technology.
Arsenal had won nine of their last ten games, but went on a surprising blow when they lost 0-1 at home to Swansea on Monday evening.
Only the 0-0 draw at champions Chelsea had ended without three points for Arsenal in the last three months. Therefore, few people had thought that Swansea would walk away with all three points from London.
– We were unlucky with the goal against today. There was still much to gain in today. If we play a match like this 20 times, then we win 19 of them, said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports.
The winning goal came when Bafetimbi Gomis were allowed to go up unimpeded from four Arsenal players five minutes before the end. The burly attacker headed the ball into the goal. Goalkeeper David Ospina sent away, but goal-line technology ruled that the ball had crossed the line.
– We’ve been working all week with how we were playing here. The players were fantastic and executed the plan to the letter, said Swansea manager Garry Monk after the game.
Swansea also had the margins on its side, and a very good goalkeeper. Lukasz Fabianski was taken from just Arsenal, and 30-year-old denied him with several class saves at his former home.
Arsenal is despite the loss secured a place in the Champions League. But the difference between 3.- and 4th place could be great. Only the top three get direct entry into the group stage, the fourth out into qualification.
Also Swansea is now approaching one for Europe. From his 8th place they have only two points up to Tottenham who holds the last place in the Europa League.
– I do not think about it. It happens, it happens. We showed what we’re good for today and will give everything in our last two games, said Monk.
